The causes of lower back pain are numerous and varied, though more often than not the cause is linked to muscle strain. This spasm of the lower back muscles can result in a feeling of horrible pain and makes it difficult to work or walk or even stand. The best way to find out the cause s to consult a physician as a physical examination will allow you to describe what the pain feels like and how far across it spreads, therefore allowing for effective treatment measures.
The diagnosis may help find out if the pain is linked to a degenerative disk disease or other underlying complications.
However until you can do so, the best way to go about it is the use of a heat and cold remedy. The use of hot and cold packs helps reduce the pain experienced and the amount of local inflammation.
Start by applying a cold compress to the area for a period of twenty minutes. Repeat the action at least twice a day. After following the cold pack treatment for a few days substitute it with a hot pack for small periods of time in order to stimulate blood flow and relax the strained nerves and muscles. Taking a warm bath will also do wonders. However make sure not make the heat pack too hot or leave it on for an extended period as it can cause burns and tissue damage.
