Women with diabetes are at a higher risk of miscarrying or giving birth to babies with congenital abnormalities. Though doctors have not been able to pinpoint the exact reason for this, it is probably due to the abnormal levels of glucose in the body as well as the fluctuation of the same. If you are diabetic and trying to conceive, it is recommended that you increase your intake of folic acid since it helps to prevent birth defects.
Your dietician and diabetes specialist will tell you the exact amount of folic acid required, but generally diabetic women need around 10 times more than other women. In order to reduce the risks of miscarriage and birth defects, even before you conceive, you should ensure that glycosolated haemoglobin levels are normal before you conceive. Also monitor your blood glucose levels very carefully while you are trying to conceive and through-out your pregnancy.
I is also recommended to consult your diabetes specialist and if necessary change your medication before you conceive.
Once you conceive, it is crucial to be careful, especially during the first trimester, since that is when most birth defects are likely to develop. It is also important to get an eye test to assess your retinas, a renal test to check the functioning of your kidneys and a dating ultrasound within the first 13 weeks of your pregnancy. Since having a big baby is one of the risks that diabetic mothers face, this scan helps the maternity team to accurately assess the growth of your baby and decide if its normal for the gestation period. Because of this factor, diabetic women often have to opt for induced labour or a caesarean delivery.
