My son has ADHD, and I want to know is there anything we can do to help him, besides putting him on medicine?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a very common condition of hyperactivity found in many children today. Initially considered a fault of parents unable to control their children, it is now known that this lack of attention and concentration is due to an imbalance of chemicals in the nervous system. Correct supervision, sometimes coupled with medications can go a long way in helping children with ADHD.

While these children are very difficult to control and this seems to be a disability in school, they grow up to be extremely intelligent, creative and energetic adults. However, it is important to channel their energy in their growing years.

It is important to provide a strong basis of structure in the routine and activities of children with ADHD so that they can adhere to a sort of regimental routine. This reduces the chances of them getting distracted. It is also important to keep repeating the instructions and reminding these children what they must do, even if it seems like a major task for the parents. Valorise their accomplishments and each successful attempt to stick to routine. Children with ADHD excel at sports such as swimming and soccer and are not very good at fine skilled activities, so make them participate in the right activity that will not only consume their energy but also increase their self-confidence. Finally an excellent way to consume their excessive energy is to give them tasks and make them feel like their contribution is important and each task fulfilled is an accomplishment.
