Herbal remedies are very popular these days despite the fact that they are rather expensive, often lead to side effects when they interact with other herbs/drugs, and are often recommended by people who have a very limited knowledge of the medical conditions and the effects of the herbs. There are several herbal remedies recommended for weight loss and they function by way of increasing discharge (urine and/or faecal), creating a feeling of false satiety, boosting the metabolism, burning fat and detoxifying the system so that it uses nutrients better and does not store fat. If combined with a healthy diet and exercise regime, herbal remedies can enhance your weight-loss programme.

Aloe Vera consumed orally works to increasing bowel movements and cleansing the system, but it has more therapeutic effects and no permanent weight loss effects. If consumed wrongly or on excess it can lead to abdominal cramping, diarrhoea and decrease in potassium level in the body. Cascara, works as a laxative and is a common ingredient in most herbal slimmers, but should be avoided during pregnancy and breast-feeding.

Dandelion, an excellent diuretic leads to weight-loss by reducing the water content of the body. Glucomannan, a popular weight-loss aid helps to delay glucose absorption in the intestines and suppresses the appetite. Though effective it can cause oesophageal obstruction and should not be given to diabetics or patients with a history of similar obstruction. Guarana is also used as a diuretic and stimulant in many weight loss products, but can cause hypertension and interfere with the work of platelets leading to excessive bleeding. Due to the many side-effects of these herbal remedies it is recommended to consult a doctor before you start taking any of the above mentioned herbs.
