Insomnia is among the most frustrating health problems you can ever experience. You have not provided any details about your problem, but in many cases, the person is unable to sleep for more than a few minutes at a time no matter how exhausted they are, and this continues for months on end. Apart from being exhausting and psychologically traumatic, the problem also impairs your ability to function normally during the day, affecting your work and social relationships as well.

If your insomnia is very severe, it is advisable to check with your doctor before attempting any measures on your own, so as to rule out any physical problem that could be causing the sleeplessness. In many cases, the problem is hormonal, or due to a neurological disorder, or a condition such as hyperthyroidism, or even due to a withdrawal from some medication that used to aid sleep, either directly or as a side effect. In the latter case, you may just need some time for your body to get used to being without this medication. In the meanwhile, you should try to relax, and not think about the problem too much - often insomnia becomes cyclical - you can't sleep, so you end up worrying about it, and this makes it more difficult to sleep. It is also advisable to walk for half an hour in the evening, eat a light dinner, and then drink a glass of milk about half an hour before going to bed. If these measures do not work, you should seek professional help - cognitive behavior therapy is very effective in treating insomnia without drugs.
