It is good that you are looking for only a temporary remedy to relieve the pain of your toothache. Many people make the mistake of relying on home remedies for months on end, allowing the tooth infection to get worse and worse while they treat only the symptoms, till finally even the pain is too much to be treated or borne. Tooth infections, cavities, cracked teeth etc cannot be treated by using home remedies.

The best you can do at home is to ease the pain till you get to the dentist. A toothache almost always requires proper medical treatment from a dentist.

As far as pain relievers for a toothache go, clove oil is probably the best.

However, you need to be careful when using it, as too much of it can harm you. What you can do is put a couple of drops of clove oil on a piece of cotton, and lodge the cotton against the affected tooth for a few minutes. This can be done three or four times through the day, but be sure not to keep the cotton in your mouth for too long each time. Alternatively, you can use a piece of clove instead of clove oil - simply place the clove on your tooth, and hold it there for several minutes.
