Home remedy to lower cholesterol?
(17 Jul 2008)

There are no real home remedies to lower cholesterol, but diet control and regular exercise are the most effective ways to keep your cholesterol levels under control, removing the need for any medication at all in most cases. High cholesterol is however a problem that often goes along with other problems, in which case your diet will need to be more restricted and you will also need to ensure that your diet does not aggravate the other problems. The safest and most effective way to do this is to consult your doctor, who will be aware of the severity and the details of all your health problems.

To tackle the specific problem of high cholesterol, you need to cut down your intake of fat, particularly saturated fats, which are the most harmful. You should also limit your intake of meat, particularly red meat - whenever you do eat meat, go for the lean portions or eat chicken or fish. Fish is particularly beneficial due to its high omega 3 fatty acid content. Flaxseed is another great source of omega 3 fatty acids, and in addition has many other health benefits including being rich in fiber. Finally, it is also important to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, and exercise regularly - this could even be a half hour walk everyday, but should ideally be 45 minutes to an hour.
