Hives can be quite a maddening problem, particularly when you are unable to determine what exactly causes the outbreaks. The condition is also known as nettle rash, and medically as urticaria, and it can be caused by a wide variety of substances and can affect any part of the body, including the mouth and throat, which are particularly dangerous as the swelling can obstruct breathing.
Treating urticaria is difficult, particularly when the cause of the allergic reaction is not determined, as you never know what will worsen the reaction.
The safest treatment is therefore plain water - although in some cases, cold water can also cause hives to break out, in such cases the cause is quite obvious. For any other allergic reaction, the best remedy is to apply cold water or ice to the affected areas. This reduces the inflammation and also eases the pain, itching, and burning.
If your whole body is affected, a cold shower will help, or you can fill up the tub with cold water. It is safer not to add anything to the water, but if you like, you can try adding ground oatmeal or cornstarch to the bathwater. It is advisable to first test the water on your hand or foot before getting your whole body into it.
