The stopping of one's ears in medical terms is due to a condition known as 'otitis media.' It is basically the infection of the middle region of the ear. The infection is caused when a cold, throat or cough infection spreads to the middle area of the ear.


These are either a viral or bacterial infection. This infection results in the blocking of the Eustachian tube, which is basically a tube that connects the ear to the back of the nose and has the purpose of maintaining equal pressure on both sides of the ear drum. And the restriction of the tube from opening creates a feeling of the ear being stopped up.

The infection can be chronic or not depending on the whether there is constant inflammation in the middle ear or nor not. When it is chronic the infection usually lasts for about a month before recurring again. This happens because the course of the infection there is a build up of fluid that gets accumulated behind the ear drum and stays there for at least three months before dissolving .when otitis media is chronic there may be no sings of pain or fever, and the ear popping sensation may go on for months at a time before one finds release. The infection when chronic may also sometimes cause a subtle loss of hearing. The best way to treat this is the use of antibiotics to treat the infection. If the ear drum is damaged then surgery is recommended .do not try and self medicate, therefore it is advisable to contact an ear specialist for help.
