Alcoholic Drink Consumption Causes
Alcoholism is an extremely complex health problem, and although it is today considered to be a disease rather than simply a “bad habit”, there is no single, definite cause for it. Even the definition of alcoholism varies substantially from authority to authority. In general however, most people would agree that alcoholism involves regular use of alcohol in spite of it causing health and social problems in one’s life.
Alcoholics are usually unable to fight the craving for alcohol, and don’t know when to stop once they start drinking. In addition, the craving is to a large extent a physical craving, and they experience severe withdrawal symptoms when they stop drinking.
The only certain factor behind alcoholism is alcohol consumption — but this by itself does not cause alcoholism.
There are many people who are able to drink responsibly and are able to stop when they are aware that it is harming them. In fact, alcoholics often seem unable to recognize the harm that they are doing to themselves and the people around them. Genetic factors play a role in alcoholism, but only to the extent of increasing the risk. Other factors could include stress and depression, which are often reasons why people drink. Availability of alcohol and the extent of alcohol use in the people around you are also factors, as are your own attitude and social attitudes to alcohol.
