Jaundice Disease Prevention Jaundice is a quite a serious medical condition that basically indicates a problem with the liver. Jaundice is a symptom of some other disease, and is not itself a disease as it is commonly thought to be. Common causes of jaundice include the various types of hepatitis, including those caused by alcohol abuse, medication, and a variety of infections, a gallstone or tumor that is blocking the bile duct, malaria, cancer, and several congenital disorders that affect the liver.
Since there are so many different factors that can cause jaundice, the treatment and management of the disease is also quite varied. The period for which you need to be careful after you have developed jaundice will also vary considerably, but it is generally advisable to go easy on your liver for at least six months. You first need to recover from whatever is affecting your liver, and even after that, it takes quite a while for your liver function to return to normal, healthy levels. For certain conditions, such as cirrhosis of the liver, you will need to be careful for the rest of your life as the damage your liver has suffered cannot be repaired. You should ask your doctor what has caused the jaundice, what precautions you should take, and for how long.
