Poison Ivy Rash Remedy

Poison ivy is caused by the toxic oil, urushiol, which is contained in the leaves and bark of plants such as poison ivy, poison oak, the mango tree, and the cashew nut shell. Poison ivy is one of the most common allergic reactions in America and only 10-15% of the population are immune to this plant. The rash begins to appear within 24 hours of contact with the plant and may get much worse over the course of a week.

It takes about 2 weeks for the reaction to run its course but in some severe cases, it may take five weeks to be completely cured.

Because urushiol attaches itself firmly to the skin within 15 minutes of your exposure to it, it is essential that you thoroughly wash the area with soap. You should also remove the clothes that you were wearing when coming into contact with the plant. If you do not do this then the chances of getting a full blown reaction are very good. Scratching does not spread the rash but in the initial stages, the oil might get under your fingernails and spread other parts of your body. In addition, scratching will only cause scars all over your skin.
