Bad hair odour is caused by fungus that thrives in oily scalps. The fungus grows on the oil secreted by the sebaceous glands on the scalp. It can affect anybody but it usually affects women in the age group of 40-50.
Hair odour can become an extremely embarrassing problem and sometimes causes people to become reclusive and avoid company. Treating hair odour involves shampooing hair regularly, preferably with an anti-microbial shampoo or one that has a high sulphur content to kill the fungus. It is also important not to share hair combs and brushes with others since the fungus transfers via this medium.
If you have a serious hair odour problem you can follow this simple home treatment to get rid of the smell. Prepare a mixture of 1 tsp baking soda with 3 cups of warm water and apply this to the hair by squirting from a bottle. Massage it gently into the scalp for 20 seconds and rinse it off properly. Alternately you can apply make a mixture of 1 tbsp of apple cider vinegar in 4 cups of water and apply it on the hair roots, massaging it properly for 10 minutes before rinsing it off. Using a soap or shampoo with sulphur content, lather your scalp properly and let it remain in your fair for 30 seconds before rinsing your hair thoroughly. Do this twice or thrice a week for best results.
