Itching or soreness around the pubic area is generally caused by yeast, fungal or bacterial infections. As long as your wife is not suffering from any unusual odor or discharge, it would be safe to use over the counter medication to get rid of the infection. However, if she does have any of these symptoms or if she has a fever I would strongly advise you and your wife to go in for a through examination to diagnose and treat this condition.

To minimize itching, your wife can wash herself with warm water and an antibacterial soap. It is best to avoid using regular scented or perfumed soaps as they can cause further irritation. Using a saline solution as a last rinse will help to combat any infection as salt has antiseptic properties.

She would do well to avoid all synthetic undergarments and use cotton panties instead.

Bacteria, fungus and yeasts require moisture to survive and so using an anti-bacterial and anti-fungal powder will not only fight the infection but will also deprive the bacteria/fungus of its required moist environment. Vaginal mucus contains lactobacilli which are essentially good bacteria that help to prevent infections. Eating foods like Yogurt that contain lactobacilli will help to fight off any infection.
