Goitre is a disease that involves swelling in the neck that is caused as a result of an enlarged thyroid gland. The swelling occurs just below the larynx or Adam's apple. The thyroid gland is responsible for the production and release of certain hormones, for which it requires iodine. Goiter is therefore caused by a deficiency of iodine. The condition is characterized by a swelling in the neck, caused by an enlarged thyroid gland. Although generally a painless condition it can be problematic if the enlarged thyroid presses against the trachea.

Since goiter is caused because of an iodine deficiency, the best way to address or treat the condition is by increasing your consumption of foods that have a high iodine a content. Some of the best sources of iodine would be pineapples, guavas, citrus fruits, strawberries, as well as other food stuffs like whole rice, egg yolk, tomatoes, onion, garlic, oats, carrots, lettuce and watercress. A juice made from swamp cabbage can also be had routinely with tea, and you can simultaneously have a couple of almonds daily.

An effective method to relieve pain involves the leaves of dandelion. Smear some clarified butter onto the leaves and warm them. Use the leaves to bandage the swollen region, and keep doing this for at least a fortnight.
