Avocado Nutritional Benefits

Avocados are also popularly called the ‘butter pear’, owing to the fact that they are very high in fat. An avocado of a medium size has around thirty grams of fat, which is as much as the fat in a quarter-pound burger. For this reason dieticians and nutritionists traditionally advised patients to cut down their intake of the fruit.

Modern research has however found it to be extremely healthy as most of the fat is monounsaturated. Monosaturated fats actually lower cholesterol levels.

Studies have shown that a regular intake of avocados actually reduces the levels of low density lipoprotein or LDL and triglycerides.

Both substances are associated with heart disease. On the other hand levels of high density lipoprotein or HDL, which has been found to reduce the risk of heart disease, showed a rise.

Avocados are not just a source of monounsaturated fats, but it is also an excellent dietary source for carotenoid lutein. It also contains significant amounts of similar carotenoids, like alpha-carotene, zeaxanthin and beta-carotene, as well as significant amounts of vitamin E. Avocados are also a rich source of potassium, vitamin B, vitamin E, and vitamin K, and dietary fiber. Just a cup of avocado contains thirty percent of the recommended daily consumption of fiber
