Mitral Valve Stenosis: Cause, Complications and Effects Mitral Valve Stenosis is a condition that arises when the mitral valve of the heart narrows down. Consequently, this obstructs the flow of blood because the valve cannot open itself fully. As a result blood has a hard time moving between the left chambers of your heart.
Naturally then, if it’s waylaid here, blood will also find it difficult to flow the way it should through the rest of your body. And this results in a number of complications. You might find it difficult to breathe well. You might experience fatigue very often, your feet or ankles might get swollen, and you might be frequently attacked by respiratory infections. In addition to this, you might also experience severe coughing and at times you might cough up blood.
Rheumatic fever has been commonly known to be the cause of mitral valve stenosis. This is because rheumatic fever does affect the heart when it attacks the body. Also, at times, medications that you take to treat a simple migraine can also affect the heart valve and lead to it narrowing down. Unfortunately, there are no medications as yet to cure mitral valve stenosis. However, you may consult a heart specialist who might prescribe drugs that help to decrease the strain on the heart and regulate its rhythms.
