How is rheumatism transmitted?
(12 Jun 2008)

Rheumatism Symptoms, Causes and Disorders
Rheumatism is not a disease, but a term that is used to refer to a group of diseases. For many years it was considered a single disease involving the heart, lungs, joints, and kidneys, but today we know that many of symptoms associated with "rheumatism" are actually symptoms of very disparate diseases, and we refer to them accordingly. Disorders that are today included under the umbrella of rheumatism include the arthritic diseases like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, septic arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and gout; as well as Ankylosing spondylitis, fibromylagia, and vasculitis.

The causes of each of these disorders is different, and it t is therefore impossible to answer the question of how rheumatism is transmitted. For one thing, some of the diseases that are categorized as rheumatism are not infectious diseases, so the question of transmission does not arise. Osteoarthritis for example is thought to be hereditary and aggravated by allergies. Fibromylagia (involving chronic pain and extreme sensitivity to touch) too is not transmitted in any way, but it seems to be triggered by some kind of trauma, either physical or mental. One of the few rheumatic diseases that is caused by an infection is rheumatic fever, which seems to originate in (but is not directly caused by) a streptococcal infection that was not treated.
