Many of the over-the-counter products targeted at oily skin can actually make the problem worse or lead to other skin problems. Excess oil secretion is usually related to an improper balance of fatty acids in your body. While it may seem counter-intuitive, taking a supplement high in omega 3 fatty acids can be very helpful for many skin conditions including oily skin. Cod liver oil, fish oil, evening primrose oil, and flaxseed oil are all high in omega 3 fatty acids (these are considered healthy fats). Check with a naturopath for recommendations on good quality brands and dosage (I recommend 1 tablespoon a day of cod liver oil). You will also want to store these supplements in the fridge to keep them from spoiling. Other recommendations: avoid using cleansers and soaps that dry out the skin--this will make your sebaceous glands secrete more oil! Instead, wash your face with plain water or a very mild soap (the kind for sensitive skin). Also, after removing makeup or cleaning your face, try using a natural astringent like witch hazel, rose petal water, or cold tea. This will close pores and help reduce oil production. Alcohol based astringents can be too harsh. Diet can also affect your skin, so avoid sugars, refined and processed foods (white bread, pasta, baked goods, etc.), and foods high in fat (especially saturated and trans-fats). Be sure to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated! If you continue to have excess oil secretion after trying some of these recommendations, you should see a professional. There may be other factors contributing that can be treated by a dermatologist or naturopathic physician. I hope this information is helpful! --Stacy Bowker, ND
