If you have had the misfortune to have found yourself in close contact with a patch of poison ivy, you will have rashes all over your body. The first thing you should do is to hold the area that has come into contact with poison ivy under a tap. Let the cold water flow over the rashes.

Take a few pinches of common salt and rub over the wet section. This will help get rid of the worst of the itching. You can also make a paste of powdered Alum and some water.

Use a cotton swab to apply this over the rash. You can also use an ice pack over the rash. This will help cool down the area and help prevent itching. Another option is using a cloth dipped in cold water over the affected area. Avoid scratching with your nails since you may cause a cut on your skin.

Oatmeal that has been powdered is generally considered an effective. Add this to the  water in a tub full of water and soak in it till you feel the worst of the effects of poison ivy disappear.
An herb called jewelweed is usually very effective in treating poison ivy. You can just cut the stem and apply the sap on the rash.
