Alternative treatment for lice Lice are extremely tough and persistent parasites, and very often home remedies to get rid of them don't work well enough. It is therefore best to use a delousing shampoo that is easily available over the counter. Today there are even herbal delousing shampoos available, so if you prefer, you can use one of these.
If you want, you can first try some home treatments, but be warned that these are not always effective, so you might simply end up prolonging the infestation and the irritation. One treatment that is sometimes recommended is applying tea tree oil to the scalp and hair. Ensure that the oil coats the scalp and the hair, from the root to the tip, and keep the oil on your head for at least 12 hours before washing it.
After you wash your hair using your regular shampoo, rinse it with a solution of vinegar and water. Applying a thick substance such as mayonnaise or petroleum jelly is also supposed to work by suffocating the lice.
You will need to use these treatments regularly for at least two weeks for there to be any chance of them working. In addition, wash all clothes and bedlinen with hot water.
