Water retention remedies Some amount of water retention just before a woman's menstrual period begins is rather normal, but if you regularly experience water retention at other times too, you should consult your doctor. Occasionally, it may be caused by an excess of alcohol or salt, or sitting in one position for a long time, but if water retention occurs regularly and these do not seem to be the causes, there may be more serious problems at work, such as a kidney or heart problem.
Salt contributes to this problem because when it builds up, it makes the body retain fluid; cutting down on salt is therefore a good idea.
If your problem is related to your menstrual cycle, you can cut down on salt only in the days before your period begins; at other times, you can eat normally. It is also important to drink lots of water, as this helps flush the salt out of your body. Exercise also helps the body get rid of excess salt and water, so you should try incorporating some kind of workout into your daily routine.
Like most people who experience water retention, your problem is that your legs tend to get swollen — the best immediate remedy for this is to raise your legs. Put your feet up on the table, or if you're in bed, prop them up on pillows for fifteen minutes.
