Obesity is one of the most common and yet underrated medical conditions. It is considered to be an epidemic in the United States of America and other developed nations where it affects more than half the population. One in every five children is also said to suffer from obesity and the count only seems to be increasing.

Studies have shown that almost $45 billion is spent on the purchase of dieting foods, techniques and pills every year while about $45 billion is additionally spent on treatment of the diseases associated with obesity. Obesity indicates the accumulation of excess fat in the body. Unfortunately, a number of people only realize the consequences of the condition once it has been allowed to establish itself in the body, after which the individual is so well set in their eating habits that even the smallest change can be quite a significant hurdle to cross. If you consume a higher amount of calories than that required by your body, the surplus amounts will be converted into fat. This is very likely to happen if you are unable to control your hunger pangs. Your BMI, or body mass index, is a calculation that identifies the healthy weight in comparison to the height of your body and should b identified at the beginning of any mission that is focused on weight reduction. A BMI rating of above 30 is considered to be obesity and the higher your reading is, indicates the higher amount of focus required in order to be successful.

Since you mention that you get you decent share of exercise, as long as you are focused and have the commitment, the major barrier to weight loss has already been conquered. You must then modify your diet in order to control the amount and type of food you eat over the course of the day. Most vegetables tend to be high in fiber as well as water content and give you the feeling of feeling full without any additional calories. Studies have also shown that dietary fiber has a positive effect on the hunger hormones of the body. Increase you intake of water to a minimum of about 8 glasses a day while making sure that you avoid any fizz drinks, soda and fruit juices. Chewing on peppermint gum whenever you feel hungry in between meals is known to kill the hunger pangs and turn your thoughts away from food. Avoid beverages like caffeine, tea and cola during the weight loss program.

Diet tips

When you are trying to lose weight, it is normally assumed that you need to starve yourself. This is not true. In fact, starving yourself will only lead to added complications. In order to lose weight in a healthy manner, you need to be a little careful in planning. First of all you should completely avoid food that contains white flour, cheese, sugar or excessive oil or butter. You should look for healthier options to replace these food items with. You can eat whole wheat bread instead of white bread. You can also cut down on your intake of bread and eat fresh fruit instead. Instead of tea or coffee or even carbonated drinks, you can drink fruit juices without any sugar. Instead of eating junk food, you can take the time to prepare healthy sandwiches for yourself or else eat salads without any rich dressing and some fruit. Low fat yogurts and buttermilk can be consumed too.

You should also force yourself to take up some regular physical exercise. Walking is the easiest and you can ensure that you walk wherever possible. You should also avoid being stressed and practice breathing exercises that will help you do this.   A good night's sleep will also help you feel healthier and lose weight.
