Urinary tract infections are very common medical conditions and are known to affect women more than men. However, on the few occasions a man contracts the condition; it is likely to be of a more severe nature. Studies have shown that about 50 percent of all women will experience a urinary tract infection at some point of time in their lives while about 30% of them will suffer from multiple reoccurrences.
Urinary tract infections account for about 8.6 million doctor visits every year in the United States of America alone. The infection can occur in any part of the urinary tract which includes organs such as the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. In most cases, the root cause of the infection is the presence of bacteria in the digestive tract that cling to the opening of the urethra and begin to multiply rapidly. The bacteria also exists near the rectum of vaginal area and can be introduced to the rectum through sexual intercourse where the continuous motion of the penis could coax the bacteria to move closer to the urethra. Once the bacterium has successfully entered the urethra, it may travel upwards – thereby causing an infection in the bladder and, sometimes, other parts of the urinary tract. Women that have multiple sexual partners and indulge in anal sex are more likely to contract a urinary tract infection that a woman who is in a monogamous relationship. Another very common cause is resisting the urge to urinate as this tends to weaken the bladder muscles which, in turn, will not ensure the complete release of urine thereby increasing the risk of bladder infection.
Urinary tract infections are unlikely to be of grave medical concern but can be the cause of significant amount of pain. The patient is likely to experience sharp bursts of pain during the release of urine as well as the presence of some amount of blood in the urine. Women may even feel an uncomfortable pressure above the pubic bone while some men may experience a fullness of the rectum.
While there are a number of easily available over the counter medications that can help with the condition, you could also try drinking large amounts of cranberry juice to aid the recovery. Cranberry juice is known to help keep the bacteria in check and completely nullify it after some time. You must also make it a point to drink plenty of water throughout the course of the day and urinate whenever you feel the urge to do so.

Natural Treatment for UTI Urinary Tract Infections (UTI) can be taken care of at home quite effectively, provided that they are detected early on. If the infection is mild and has hot taken root yet, its always easier to control and take care of it at home. If it is strong, however, you would need to consult with a medical practitioner in order to correctly cure it. Sometimes, when left alone or ignored, they can actually cause long term or permanent damage. The finest remedy to cure UTIs at home is drinking excessive water. If you can, you must try to drink at least 10 to 15 litres of water everyday. This is the best way to try and flush out the toxins that have come into your urinary tract.
The other highly effective remedial measure to treat UTIs at home is to consume cranberry juice. The fresh berries will also work, but the juice is always considered to be more effective. This is simply because you will consume less of the fruit when you eat it and more when you drink its juice. Cranberries have an active chemical that prevents bacteria from forming deep roots inside your urinary tract. You must also try to eat at least 200 grams of yogurt everyday. If you can have sour yogurt, it will work more effectively.
