Dietary advice for Scurvy Scurvy is basically a disease of deficiency, and diet control is pretty much all the treatment that is needed to cure it. The disease is caused by a drastic lack of vitamin C over a long period of time. Today, with the easy availability of such a large variety of foods that contain vitamin C, the disease is not as common as it once was, but occasionally, people are affected by it. The gums become soft and bleed a lot, dark spots known as sun spots or liver spots appear on the skin, and the patient feels weak and constantly fatigued. Today, most people experience only mild symptoms, and so no drastic measures are needed. You should just start eating lots of foods with Vitamin C — citrus fruits are a great source of vitamin C, and you can have a glass of orange juice every morning. In addition, tomatoes, blackcurrants, carrots, guavas, and papayas contain some amount of vitamin C, so you should have at least one of these everyday. Be sure to eat all of these fruits and vegetables as fresh as possible, as processing and overcooking them can destroy most of their vitamin C content, making them useless.
