Breast Feeding

I have a 19 months old baby, I have stopped breast feeding for about a year now but after squeezing my right breast today I noticed a small milky discharge, I want to know if that's normal or a concern? I am 35 years old.

Advice on Breast Feeding

A small amount of milky discharge after you have stopped breastfeeding is quite normal. This may also continue for some time after your baby has been weaned off to the bottle. However, it is essential that you get this condition checked out by a doctor before you come up with your own conclusions about the causes and concerns.

In extremely rare cases, this discharge could be a harbinger of other, more dangerous things. A medical examination will rule out any abnormalities and put your mind at rest.

Unfortunately, there are no simple home remedies available that you can employ to take care if this problem, since it is hardly something that can be conclusively diagnosed without a medical examination and, possibly a batter of tests.

In any case, considering that you have mentioned your age as 35 years, you should opt for a breast examination and a pap smear every year without fail by a gynaecologist. Not only will this eliminate any problem that you may have developed, it is also a safety measure to guard against unknown problems that may strike at any time. It is also helpful as it will detect any new problems or abnormalities that you may miss yourself.
