Alternative Treatment for Children Cough

Colds and coughs are among the most common illnesses to affect children, and although they are usually extremely minor problems, they certainly cause a great deal of discomfort and irritation. You haven't mentioned whether the child has a dry cough or a wet (productive) cough, and more importantly, how old the child is. Certain treatments should not be given to children under two years of age, and this applies to home remedies too, not only to prescribed or over the counter medications.

Honey, for example, is an excellent remedy for coughs, but infants (children below the age of one) should not be given honey as it contains botulinum spores that their systems are not yet equipped to handle. For an older child however, you can prepare a mixture of honey, lemon, and hot water, and make him or her drink this concoction. This concoction is quite tasty too, and the child is unlikely to make a fuss about taking it even several times a day.

Another rather pleasant remedy that uses honey is a mixture of equal parts of honey and ginger juice. Along with this, if the child gargles with salt water at least twice a day, the cough should disappear within a few days.

If the child is too young to be given honey or if the cough lasts for longer than a week, a visit to the doctor is advisable.
