Mucus in stools advice It is important for you to know that a small amount of mucus is always present in your stool. The intestines manufacture and use mucus to keep their walls well lubricated and moist and it helps in easy expelling of the feces as well. So, do not be alarmed if you have managed to spot some of this mucus, even though normally it is barely visible to the naked eye.
However, if this has been recurring for more than a week, and if the quantity of mucus is generous, then it is a cause for concern. Before examining any other possibility, it is good to know that when you have constipation or loose motions, then the quantity of mucus in stool normally increases.
Normally, mucus in the stool can be indicative of colitis, irritable bowel syndrome or, in some rare cases, Crohn’s disease. It could also be possible that you have an ulcer, which is causing excess mucus build up and it is manifesting itself by passing through your stool. In order to eliminate or determine any or all of these possibilities, however, you would need to consult a doctor, who will put you through a battery of tests which can make an accurate diagnosis.
