Head lice are tiny, parasitic insects that live on the scalp, hidden among the hair. They feed on blood from the scalp and cause an itchy sensation that can be unbearable at times. Nits, the eggs laid by lice, are attached to the hair with very strong glue.
They are kept close to the scalp so that the warmth required for development is easily available. Once the eggs hatch, the egg remains attached to the hair as a white blob, close to the scalp. Skin color does not influence the existence of lice, but they are less commonly found in people of African descent, because of the consistency of their hair. Though unable to cause any serious detriment to health, lice can cause psychological damage to people who are afflicted with them. A majority of lice infections come about in children who are in constant contact with other children while at school or play.
The transfer of head lice is brought about by coming into close contact with someone whose hair is previously infested with lice. They cannot jump from one person to another and cannot survive for long periods of time without warmth. It is very rare that they are passed on through pillows or clothing. However, frequent exchange of personal clothing and hairbrushes or combs will most certainly cause the spread of lice. The most common symptom, indicating the presence of lice is an insatiable urge to scratch the scalp. This itchiness is caused when the lice bite into the skin of the scalp to draw blood.
Commonly used methods to remove lice from the hair include the application of onion juice to the scalp. The pungency of the sulfur content of the onion will kill the lice without much difficulty. Once this is completed, simple washing of the hair will remove the dead lice. This procedure, however, needs to be repeated over a period of three or four days, depending on the intensity of the infection. Garlic is also known to have a pungent chemical content, and when made into a paste and rubbed into the scalp before sleeping, has a similar effect to that of the onion juice. Oil, in which neem leaves have been left to soak overnight, will draw out the extract from the leaves, which helps to kill the lice. This oil should be applied to the scalp and left for a while, before the hair is combed with a fine tooth comb to pull the dead lice out of the hair.

Lice query Head lice infestation is a dangerous thing. It is absolutely imperative to get rid of it as soon as possible, otherwise there is the fear that it will spread to other members of the home as well. It is always best to arrest the problem before it takes on large proportions and gets out of control. To answer your question, there is no statistical evidence whatsoever to indicate that head lice affect any race, community or colour of people more than another. It would be incorrect to assume that there is any fact in such a statistic.
Meanwhile, there are some excellent home remedies you can follow to take care of the problem quite easily and inexpensively. Mayonnaise is a very useful remedial measure to get rid of lice. You should rub it deep into the patches where you can actually see lice and eggs nesting and leave it on for 20 minutes to an hour. Wash with regular shampoo. This will remove lice within a couple of days. Another effective method is to apply shaving cream to the scalp and leaving it on for 10 minutes. You must follow this procedure daily for at least a week for it to remove the problem from the roots.
