Does mental stress also causes rheumatism?
( 3 Apr 2008)

Rheumatism is a condition that usually affects the joints and connective tissues in the body. Soreness and fever are some of the symptoms that accompany the pain and inflammation that are characteristic of rheumatism. This condition is commonly seen in aging individuals.

Rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout, spondylitis, frozen shoulder and tennis elbow are the most commonly seen forms of rheumatism. There are many causes for rheumatic pain, mental stress being one of them. The consumption of acidic, oily, spicy and fatty foods is also known to cause rheumatism. Rheumatism could also be caused by an accumulation of toxins in the body, hormonal imbalances and dental infections or it could also be hereditary. Exposure to wet, cold conditions is known to aggravate the condition.

To prevent rheumatism that is triggered by stress it is essential to remain calm and composed. Simple breathing exercises can be executed at any time of the day to reduce stress. A common breathing exercise is inhaling till the count of four, holding your breath for another four counts and then slowly exhaling till the count of eight. This can be repeated several times a day whenever you feel the stress building. Meditation is also recommended to reduce stress levels. Chamomile has the ability to relieve stress and promotes restful sleep due to its mild sedative qualities. It also relieves rheumatic pain and muscular stress due to its anti-inflammatory properties. Drinking a cup of chamomile tea daily, especially before going to bed is beneficial to those suffering from rheumatism. Regular exercise also helps in relieving stress and keeping the body fit.

Rosemary oil helps in reducing swelling and inflammation due to its anti-inflammatory quality. Gently massaging the affected area with this oil will help in relieving the pain and reducing inflammation. Adding a few drops of rosemary oil to bath water also proves beneficial in relaxing the joints and muscles. Soaking the affected area in Epsom salts added to warm water is also known to reduce the discomfort caused by rheumatism. Burdock is known for its capacity to cleanse blood thus reducing the buildup of toxins in the body. Celery seeds are recommended for the treatment of rheumatism due to their anti-rheumatic qualities. The juice of raw potatoes is also beneficial in treating rheumatism as it reduces inflammation and relieves pain considerably. Walnuts and garlic are also useful in the treatment of rheumatism. Increasing your intake of green leafy vegetables and fresh fruits is recommended as they help in the repair of damaged tissue and quicken the healing process.

Rheumatism causes

Rheumatism is a debilitating disease which can be caused by a variety of physiological factors. Thus far, there is no scientific evidence to prove that stress alone can be the cause of rheumatism. However, it is amply proved scientifically that rheumatism can be aggravated by a stressful life. The causes of rheumatism may include the early onset of rheumatic fever. It could also be accumulation of certain kinds of toxins in the body due to prolonged usage of certain types of medication and food products that contain the toxin, and your body has been exposed to them over a long period of time. In several cases, rheumatism is also a hereditary condition. It is also useful to know that this particular disease may also skip a generation or even various generations before it is handed down.

If a person who already has rheumatism leads a high stress life, the disease will grow manifold, and twice a quickly as it would otherwise. One of the most effective ways to control the problem and possibly nip it in the bud is to include a daily routine of Yoga. This kind of exercise is not only good for the body; it will also help you to keep a calm and cool mind at all times.
