There is no known medical or alternative cure for a tailbone cyst (pilonidal cyst). You need to visit a doctor as soon as possible as your condition is bound to worsen in time. Most cysts can lay dormant for years and once they start to surface, they appear just once a year or so.


In such cases, the best treatment would be to apply a hot compress to the area in order to bring it to a head. This will cause the abscess to burst open and drain. You can also visit your doctor who will make a small incision and drain the cyst.


In relatively rare cases, if a cyst resurfaces often, the doctor may recommend surgery. This would involve a complete lancing in which the entire affected area is surgically removed.  

Although the exact cause of these cysts is still unexplained, there are various activities that have been proven to aggravate them.   Undue irritation and pressure on the tailbone, caused by long car rides or horseback riding, will almost certainly cause a cyst to reappear. Avoid sitting with the same posture for a prolonged period of time. Remove the hair from this area regularly and clean it daily using a glycerin based soap. Avoid applying powder or other products unless your doctor advises you to do so.
