Hiccups advice and remedies

Hiccups that do not stop for two days are not a normal sign. You must see a doctor immediately in order to determine what the exact problem is. It could be something serious such as a problem with the diaphragm that is causing hiccups.

Although it is extremely rare, a tumor or an abscess in the diaphragm could cause prolonged bouts of hiccupping. It could also be something like irritation along the phrenic nerve of the diaphragm that is causing prolonged hiccups. These could be the possibilities of hiccups that last for this long a period of time.

In known cases of extreme and protracted hiccupping, it could be necessary for the patient to be operated upon in order to get rid of the problem. The phrenic nerve may have to be frozen or, in extremely difficult cases, even removed in order to stop the hiccupping. There could also be a variety of other causes for protracted hiccupping. Sometimes, it would be necessary to get rid of the other causes in order to take care of the hiccupping. But this can only be determined after a detailed medical examination. Home remedies for curing normal bouts of hiccups that last a few minutes include startling the person, taking deep breaths, eating a mouthful of sugar and drinking a glass of water at one go.
