Irritable bowel syndrome is a disorder accompanied by a group of symptoms, such as gas, diarrhea, abdominal pain, cramping, constipation and bloating. The bowel fails to function properly. Individuals with irritable bowel syndrome are very sensitive, with regard to their muscles and nerves. White mucus in the stool and the feeling of not completing the bowel are the other symptoms. Colonoscopy, physical examination, blood tests and barium enema x ray are the various methods of detecting irritable bowel syndrome. Associated pain is difficult to eliminate. Medication, dietary regimen and lifestyle modification with a stress free life proves beneficial. The best way is to curtail foods that worsen the situation. Carbonated beverages, chocolate, fatty foods, alcohol, caffeinated drinks and milk related products are completely avoided. Maintenance of a diary helps in keeping a track of foods that makes your condition bad. Always note what you eat and the kind of symptoms that occur. The time of occurrence of the symptoms is also to be noted. Softer stool is achieved by fibrous foods. Breads, cereals, vegetables, whole grains and fruits are recommended. Small and frequent meals prevent diarrhea and cramping. Abdominal pain is relieved by antispasmodics. Anti depressants prove beneficial in treating depression associated with IBS.
