(18 Feb 2008)

The involuntary action of breathing is generally taken for granted and the only time we really pay it any kind of attention is when something feels wrong. Conditions like nasal congestion and difficulty in breathing tend to be increasingly common, especially in the highly polluted atmospheres we live in, especially in most urban cities all over the world. Sinus infections are extremely common and are characterized by the inflammation of the nasal tissue, which in turn causes a blockage in the path leading up to the sinus cavity.

As a result of this inflammation, there is a build up of mucous in the sinus cavity. This could lead to the development of a headache, excessive sneezing, a sore throat, post nasal drip and halitosis amongst many other uncomfortable experiences when suffering from the condition. There are a number of causes for the development of a sinus infection. For instance, there is always the possibility of the condition being caused by some kind of bacteria or fungus. These fungus or bacteria may have been inhaled in the air or consumed through some kind of contaminated food. Besides this, the infection could also easily be the result of pressure on the nasal tissue; such as in the case of blowing one’s nose too hard. Another very common cause of chronic nasal congestion is when there is a structural abnormality in the layout of the nasal passage. In most cases, this could only be permanently corrected with the help of surgical restructuring.

Because of the fact that it is such a common occurrence, there are a number of cures for sinus infection. An effective treatment for sinus infection is the use of easily available saline spray that one can get over the counter at any medical store. The consumption of pungent and spicy foods is also part of the home remedies for sinus infection. This is one of the most highly regarded cures for sinus infection and nasal congestion as it loosens the mucus and allows it to drain off. Another one of the oldest cures for sinus infection is to consume a portion of basil tea. One should also keep in mind that treating the root cause of the condition is really the only method to ensure that the problem goes away completely. Some people treat sinus infections by concentrating on the symptoms and their suppression. In cases where the occurrence is the result of an allergic reaction or some other underlying medical complication, the most effective cures for sinus infection is to treat those underlying conditions. Methods of how to prevent sinus infection would require that you ensure that the environments to which your nasal passages are exposed are not likely to be infected with harmful bacterium or viruses.

A sinus infection is triggered by an obstruction in the nasal lining, in this condition mucus builds up and causes an increase in pressure, creating a perfect ground for bacteria to breed.
The idea is to prevent the nasal mucus to thicken so that it flows freely and does not breed an infection.
