Anaemia advice: I have recently been diagnosed with Anaemia - blood count was 4 which doctor tells me is very low. I have all normal symptoms but also have pain in joints of my hands and feet and "thick head". Are these also symptoms of anaemia?

Symptoms of Anaemia

Anemia is basically a disease characterized by a lower count of red blood cells or hemoglobin. The symptoms of this disease are based upon the types and underlying causes of anemia. Anemia is basically associated with various clinical health conditions like ulcers, hemorrhage, menstrual problems or cancer. If this is the case, specific symptoms of these clinical conditions can be noticed prior to the actual symptoms of anemia.

The symptoms you are talking about are the symptoms of anemia that may be related to some medical condition. There can be various other symptoms depending on the severity of the condition. The most common symptoms include weakness, fatigue, shortness of breath, rapid heartbeat, exertion, headache, dizziness, irritability and pale skin.

Anemia also reduces the working capacity and mental stability of an individual. The person may also lose his or her sexual drive. Mild anemia caused by iron deficiency has also been associated with restless leg syndrome. This is because of impaired iron acquisition in cells that are responsible for regulating the dopamine in the brain.

An unusual symptom of anemia known as Pica also occurs in some cases. This symptom is associated with eating unusual substances like clay, cardboard and raw starch.
