Nose bleeds causes and cures

The nose is a part of the body which is abundantly rich in blood vessels. Nosebleeds are a fairly common problem and may be nothing to worry about usually. Sometimes however they may become emergencies.

Some cause of nosebleeds include

  • injury to the nose
  • Picking the nose may scrape the insides and hurt them
  • Dry air
  • Blowing the nose too strongly
  • Sneezing
  • Colds and allergies
  • Polyps in the nose
  • Blood thinning medications or disorders of the blood
  • High blood pressure

Some measures to take following a nosebleed are listed below:

  • Pinch your nostrils shut using your thumb and forefinger and keep it that way for about 15 minutes. If the bleeding continues in spite of this you should see a doctor
  • Apply ice to the area with gentle pressure. This helps slow down bleeding and reduces swelling
  • Once bleeding has stopped, don't blow your nose even if you feel the urge to do so.

This may get you bleeding again
  • Do not stuff your nose with cotton or insert anything inside to clean the blood. Fibers from the cotton wool or any cloth you use to staunch the flow may stick to the wound and cause fresh bleeding
  • Sniffing yarrow is said to be good for a nosebleed but should not be used by pregnant women or people with hay fever.
