Nasal congestion home remedies

Congestion may be caused by an infection, sinusitis or by chronic allergies. If nasal congestion is accompanied by any of the following symptoms, you should consult your primary health care giver.

  • Fever
  • Persistent cough
  • Yellowish or greenish, foul-smelling phlegm
  • Severe headache
  • Facial pain

Here are some simple ways to help relieve congestion:

Make  up your own nasal spray.

Make up your own nasal spray by mixing half a teaspoon of salt and a pinch of baking soda to one cup of lukewarm water. You can then  use a bulb syringe to dispense the solution. This will help by removing irritants from the nasal passage.

After spraying a few times, blow your nose thoroughly.

Take a hot shower:  A hot steamy shower will help clear up your nasal passage.

Take something spicy: Spicy food is said to work well to clear up congestion. You can drink a hot spicy soup or make up a hot curry dish. Or you can simply sprinkle some chilly flakes on to your pizza. .

Inhale vapours:  Take equal parts of apple cider vinegar and water and heat it over a stove, allowing it to simmer for a while. Lean over the stove and start inhaling deeply when fumes begin to rise from the pan. Take several deep breaths until you feel relief. You can use some Vicks Vaporub in place of Apple cider vinegar. This should also give your relief.
