Strep throat natural remedies

Most sore throats are caused by viral infections and clear up on their own without any treatment. A strep throat however is caused by bacterial If you have strep throat you may see these symptoms within 3 days:

  • red and white patches in the throat
  • headache
  • lower stomach pain
  • fever
  • difficulty swallowing
  • enlarged tonsils
  • malaise
  • loss of appetite
  • nausea or vomiting
  • skin rash

Antibiotics are usually the first line of treatment for a strep throat, so you should probably consult your health care provider to confirm a diagnosis and to get a prescription. Here are some remedies to help you feel better while your throat heals:

  1. Keep your throat moist by sucking on hard candy or lozenges
  2. Eat ice cold or frozen foods to help soothe the throat
  3. Gargle with warm salt water
  4. Avoid spicy and acidic foods
  5. Drink plenty of water
  6. Get lots of rest

Some herbal remedies for sore throats include:

  • Slippery Elm
  • Licorice
  • Marshmallow
  • Honeysuckle Flower

In addition to these you can try a tea made up of the juice of 1/4th of a Lemon, one tea spoon of Apple cider vinegar, a small pinch of cayenne and one teaspoon of honey.


This is an old home remedy for sore throats. A throat spray made of sage is also said to be helpful with sore throats but may have to be purchased commercially as it has to be prepared in exact proportions.
