Anemia dietary tips Anemia is often a result of low hemoglobin levels in the body which decreases the ability of the red blood cells to carry enough oxygen for the body. For iron deficiency anemia treatment often recommended is high iron diet along with iron supplements. You can include the following foods in your diet for anemia –
- There are two forms of iron, heam and non-heam.
Heam iron mainly present in animal products is readily available for the body where as non-heam iron present in vegetarian sources is less available. Good sources of iron include oysters, liver (both chicken and beef) turkey, sardines, beef, shrimps, nuts, green leafy vegetables especially spinach and broccoli, beans, iron fortified breads and cereals, apricots, raisins and prunes. - Supplement your diet with vitamin C, as this vitamin helps in the absorption of iron in the body.
Avoid consuming tea, coffee or alcohol after a meal as these inhibit the absorption of iron in the body. - Add some vitamin B12 in your diet too, as it could be possible that the anemia is due to lack of this vitamin. Good sources include fermented products, yeast, cheese, milk, eggs, beef and pork.
