Treatment for Conjunctivitis Pink eye, sore eye or conjunctivitis is basically an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thin membrane that covers the eye. Conjunctivitis usually manifests itself in the form of red itchy eyes, followed by watery secretions and in severe cases secretion of pus which dries up while sleeping and makes the eyelashes stick together. Easily transmitted through direct contact, conjunctivitis spreads fast in overcrowded, dirty, unhygienic environments.
It can also occur due to overexposure to artificial light and prolonged and abusive use of the eyes. To remedy the effects of this, practice some basic eye exercises to relax and strengthen the eyes. Placing the palms over the eyes for a few minutes, while breathing deeply, is also beneficial for the eyes.
The best and the wisest remedy for conjunctivitis is keeping the eyes clean, by washing them with sterile water. A warm compress applied to the eyes for 5 to 10 minutes also helps soothe the eyes, except in cases of allergic conjunctivitis when a cold compress works better.
Carrots and spinach are excellent for eyes in general and thus even during conjunctivitis – drink the juice of spinach and carrots in a proportion of 2:3 daily, or parsley juice mixed with carrots in the same proportion. A cup of gooseberry juice had with two tbsps of honey has also proven to be very beneficial, as have foods rich in Vita A and B2 – whole milk, yoghurt, tomatoes, green leafy vegetables, citrus fruits, almonds, mangoes and papayas. Avoid bananas, foods rich in sugar, starch and caffeine. Finally remember not to share your towel or wash-cloth with anyone since this is an extremely contagious disease.
