constipation cure for an infant

While most infants have several bowel movements a day, some tend to get constipated due to a low-fiber diet, lack of physical activity and inadequate intake of fluids. Excess consumption of milk and dairy products can also lead to constipation, as can white rice. It could also happen due to stress related to change in routine or environment, particularly during travel.

Most babies facing constipation grunt and turn red while passing stools, some may also experience discomfort and not be able to pass their stools properly and even pass some blood along with the stools. Never administer laxatives or enema to infants facing constipation, without proper consultation and guidance from a doctor.

You could however try simple home remedies – if the baby is over 2 months old, give him 2 to 4 oz of fruit juices twice a day.

If over 4 months old and has started some solid foods then feed the baby, food rich in fiber, like peas, beans, apricots, prunes, spinach etc. You could also soak a few raisins in hot water and once soaked, crush and strain the mixture to make the baby drink it. This helps increase bowel movement. For older children, try giving them healthy snacks in between meals. If they dislike vegetables, disguise them by experimenting with recipes or adding an interesting sauce or even camouflaging them in other food. Above all, ensure that the child's liquid intake is sufficient. Forcing toilet training at an early age also makes children resist and leads to constipation. Don't force the issue; instead subtly bring up the habit by encouraging independence and good hygiene habits.
