I have a pinched nerve in my neck, what should I do?

Remedies for pinched nerve

When a nerve is being compressed or constricted and causes tingling and/or pain, it is commonly known as a Pinched Nerve. If compressed, the nerve is unable to perform its neurological functions and can not transmit the adequate signals to parts of the body it connects and this causes the pain or tingling. While this could be caused due to compression by a bone, some specialists believe it could also be due to a herniated disc or even osteoarthritis.

However, irrespective of the cause of the pain, it is important to remember that pinched nerve pains are never permanent. The best way to combat them is to avoid thinking about the pain and trust your body to heal itself and take care of the problem.

For instant relief though, you could massage the muscles in the affected area to increase blood circulation and reduce pressure on the pinched nerve. It is also important to resist a sedentary lifestyle and to stay active. If your work entails sitting over long stretches of time, take small breaks of 5 minutes and walk around a little to stretch your muscles and avoid pinched nerves. Try a few basic stretching exercises at your desk to loosen the muscles and relieve the tension in your nerves and muscles. Finally it is crucial to maintain a good posture – slouching adds stress to the nerve near the disk and can lead to tingling and pain.
