Natural remedies for Conjunctivitis Conjunctivitis, commonly known as ‘Pink Eye', is swelling of the outermost layer and the inner surface of the eyelid. Conjunctivitis is usually caused by bacterial infections, viruses, or allergies. Sometimes, it is also caused by irritants such as, chlorine, soaps, or smoke.
Here are some simple home remedies that will give you relief from conjunctivitis:
- Dip a cloth in warm water and gently place it on your eyes. Do this for five to ten minutes and repeat at least four times. This helps in immediate relief from pain.
- Ensure that your eyes are clean all the time. Regularly wash the crusts with a cotton ball, dipped in warm and clean water.
- Avoid sharing your clothes or towels with anyone. Conjunctivitis is highly contagious.
- Place a cool tea bag (that contains chamomile) on each eye for about five to ten minutes. Repeat this three to four times a day.
- Drink 300 ml vegetable juice (made of spinach and carrot) everyday.
- Wear right-fitting goggles while swimming. Chlorine in swimming pools is one of the common causes for conjunctivitis.
Conjunctivitis can be treated easily and goes away by itself in a week's time. However, in cases where the infection stays on for more than five days or there is significant pain in the eyes along with redness, you must consult a doctor and get a proper diagnosis and treatment.
