Heartburn cures

When you say that “food blocks inside”, are you referring to a general sensation that food is not digested, or do you actually mean that your mother experiences difficulty swallowing? In the case of the latter, your mother should visit a doctor, as there can be several reasons this could happen.

If the problem is only one of heartburn and digestion, there are several home remedies and precautions that can be taken.

Some general practices that your mother should follow with regard to meals include:

  • Eat slowly and do not talk while chewing. Swallowing air or swallowing food without sufficient mastication can contribute to heartburn after the meal.
  • Eat smaller meals.

Dinner in particular should be light.
  • Do not go to bed immediately after a meal. Allow a gap of at least two hours between mealtime and bedtime.
  • Take a short walk after a meal — even strolling around the house will do. This helps digestion.
  • Make a note of what foods tend to exaggerate the problem, and avoid them, particularly at night. Most people find that alcohol, caffeine, fatty foods, spicy foods, citrus fruits, even milk, can lead to heartburn.
  • In addition, your mother should avoid stress. If your mother smokes she should stop. If you smoke, you should stop too, or at least avoid smoking indoors.
