Cough remedy
It is helpful that you’ve mentioned that your son is one year old, as different remedies are needed to treat a cough in smaller children. One the easiest remedies for cough in an infant is applying a paste of turmeric on his forehead. Follow this with the application of warm betel leaves smeared with eucalyptus oil to the chest three to four times a day for about fifteen minutes at a time.
If the congestion is too much you could also give your son a warm (not hot) bath which contains a few drops of eucalyptus, sage, or thyme oil.
The vapors from these oils help open up the air passages, allowing your baby to breathe easier. At the same time, they also soothe the soreness of the throat.
You can also prepare an effective and easy-to-make cough syrup using 1 teaspoon of raw onion juice and 1 teaspoon of honey. This can be given two or three times a day, and works well with small children as well as adults.
If you still breast feed your child then it is probably one of the best remedies you can use, as breast milk helps heal and bring relief to a cough better than any other drink. As it is not a dairy product (milk is found to be bad for coughs), it is probably the safest form of nutrition for your son when he’s suffering from a cough. In terms of your child not sleeping or eating well, this is not unusual with severe coughs, but if it persists, it is best that you consult your doctor to further diagnose the problem.
