Blood in stool health advice

Blood in the stools can be due to a large number of reasons. Some of these are relatively benign, while others can be life threatening conditions that need immediate attention.

There are usually many possible sources of bleeding when blood is noticed in the stools, but in your case it seems likely that the source is in the anal or rectal area itself.

Often, although not always, other accompanying symptoms may exist, such as itching or pain. Possible causes of rectal or anal bleeding include hemorrhoids, anal or rectal fissures, infections, and tumours. In any case, constipation is probably the most common underlying cause for several conditions that lead to rectal and anal bleeding.

If you suffer from constipation, there is a lot that you can do to remedy the situation, primarily in the areas of diet and exercise.

Ensure that your diet contains adequate fiber, both soluble and insoluble. You can do this by regularly eating fruits and vegetables as well as whole grain. Flaxseed is one great source of fiber with many additional health benefits. You should also ensure that you drink at least eight glasses of water day. In addition, some amount of daily exercise will keep your body generally fit as well as improve the functioning of your digestive system. If nothing else, take a half hour walk at least once in the day.
