Home remedies for unplugged ears

A plugged ear is generally a mild problem that most commonly occurs due to allergies, a cold or some other infection. Mostly, the symptoms last from a few hours to several weeks. However, if it lasts for a long period, a visit to an ENT specialist is suggested to rule out any complications. The reason for ears getting plugged is the blocking of the Eustachian tubes, due to which the air pressure in your middle ear does not equalize with the pressure in your outer ear. In such a condition, the eardrum is unable to vibrate normally, so your hearing is affected. You may also experience pain because of plugged ears.

The following are a few simple techniques that you can try at home for some relief from plugged ears:

  • Take a deep breath, pinch your nostrils closed, and close your mouth. Now try to blow out through your pinched nostrils. (Do not use too much force however.)
  • Yawn.
  • Swallow frequently.
  • Chew gum.

Plugged ears can also occur due to muscular tension. In such cases, try yoga and simple exercises. Avoid activities that can have a negative impact on the head and neck muscles, such as embroidery and too much writing work.
