Menstrual cramps remedies

Menstrual cramps, technically known as dysmenorrhea, affects 50 per cent of all menstruating women, and basically involves pain in the pelvis or lower abdomen during menstrual periods. There are two types of menstrual cramps — primary dysmenorrhea seems to be linked to the release of high levels of prostaglandins during menstruation, while secondary dysmenorrhea is caused by other conditions such as endometriosis and ovarian cysts. In the case of secondary dysmenorrhea, you require medical treatment in order to determine and address the underlying cause.

Primary dysmenorrhea on the other hand, while it cannot be "cured", can be made much less painful. Most women find that oral contraceptives are extremely effective in controlling primary dysmenorrhea, but there are several simple home remedies that also help. Regular exercise usually decreases the intensity of pain and discomfort during menstrual periods, as does a healthier diet. In particular, cut down on junk food and red meat, eat more vegetables and fruits, and ensure that you get enough calcium, magnesium, and vitamins. Try to relax and avoid stress, as this may aggravate menstrual cramps. Finally, try some heat therapy. A warm bath or a hot water bottle applied for half an hour provides substantial relief from muscle spasms and cramping.
