Headache treatment

For how long has your father been suffering from this pain and do the headaches and pain in the spine always occur together? It is best that your father visits a doctor for a diagnosis. There is a possibility that the headaches and the back pain are unrelated, unless, of course, they always occur simultaneously.

Has your father recently undergone any medical procedure that involved his spine? Sometimes, procedures such as spinal anaesthesia result in headaches due to a leakage of cerebrospinal fluid into the epidural space. The condition is not serious and is usually addressed by a period of adequate bed rest and painkillers. Occasionally, a procedure known as an epidural blood patch may be required, which involves creating a blood clot that will plug the leak.

Headaches can occur due to a variety of reasons, including injury, a tumour, infections of the sinus, ears and teeth, swelling of a blood vessel, tension, eye-strain, and low blood sugar. Some of these, as you can see, are benign and easily addressed, while others are serious and require urgent intervention. After a careful investigation of the frequency, intensity, and other details, including links with any particular activity and associated symptoms, your family doctor will be in the best position to determine the cause of your father's headaches and spinal pain.
