Pinched nerve treatment There are three things you can do to ease both pinched nerves and muscle spasms. The first is to stretch — a pinched nerve is usually the result of the surrounding muscles compressing the nerve. Gently stretching the muscles in the affected area will relieve the pressure on the nerve and also improve the blood flow.
Secondly, you should rest the affected area. Lie down for half an hour or an hour, or if possible until you obtain some relief. Relaxing the muscles will also relieve the pressure on the nerve.
Finally, try applying a hot compress. An ordinary hot water bottle, available at any medical store, can be used for this. Lie down and use the bottle to apply heat to your neck for 15 minutes at a time, once every hour or two hours.
People often confuse muscle spasm and pinched nerves. The two are sometimes related, but are not quite the same thing. A muscle spasm usually doesn't last very long, is quite harmless, and feels different as well. Only in the case of a pinched nerve will you experience radiating, burning pain. You may also feel slight weakness or numbness. Pinched nerves sometimes require professional help. If you get no relief after a day or two, or if the pain is too much to handle, visit your doctor.
